Louise St. Denis, Managing Director of the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, has announced that the Institute has acquired the website, GenealogyWise <www.genealogywise.com>. The Genealogy Community Director of GenealogyWise, Gena Philibert Ortega, has also officially joined the Institute. She can be reached at genwise@genealogicalstudies.com.

GenealogyWise is a place to connect with new found cousins, share resources, and learn more about genealogy. As part of the National Institute, GenealogyWise members will benefit from the opportunities that the National Institute provides,” said Gena.

GenealogyWise is the social network for genealogists. This is the place to network with other researchers, and make discoveries about your family history.You can join or create surname, locality, or topic groups. The Group feature allows you to collaborate, share, and ask questions of other members.

You can also join the Chat Room for a quick question about research, a chat with fellow genealogists, or attend one of our educational presentations. As well, you can post a blog entry or a forum question from the GenealogyWise homepage. This is a great way to share your knowledge on a genealogy topic or to ask a question.

To date, there are over 23,000 members online.

A new feature will be added – the Live Meeting. GenealogyWise members will be able to access Live Meetings onsite, and this will open up more education opportunities to members that the Institute has to offer.
For the month of March, the Institute is offering a number of US courses as well as courses on Methodology, Electronic Records, and in Analysis and Skill Mentoring.

    Hi Sandy,
    Thanks for posting this information. I wasn’t aware of either of these organizations. I am not a professional (nor do I aspire to be) genealogist, but with the amount of family material I have, I’m seeking the best, most efficient way to catalog it and to document, in an easily-searched manner, various facts and details I uncover through letters, scribble notes, wallet-photos, diaries, and documents — so that as I write my family history/memoir, I can easily access the facts and details. Is this a good place to learn some basic documentation skills and methods? I have a multi-page excel spread sheet of the “macro” of what’s in 24 bankers’ boxes, but each box has tons of detailed information. And each letter (of hundreds) I read tells me something I need to catalog. Just wondering. Enjoy so many of your posts. You can reply here, if you think others would be interested, or to my email.     Thank you for your comment. I like to publish this type of subject matter, because it gives visitors an idea of what’s out there that they might have missed. I have visited your blog at http://familyarchaeologist.blogspot.com and can say to anyone reading this response that it’s unique, interesting and certainly book worthy.

    My goal in publishing this type of article is suggest ideas for people to explore with futher research. I gather from your comment that you’re not interested in genealogy credentials but would be interested in the areas of document retention and management of what you have in those banker’s boxes. The NGS offers some very interesting courses as does Family Tree Magazine. They may have courses that focus on what you need without the rest.

    I’m planning to look into document preservation so that I can preserve some of my own documentation the right way and also write about it on this blog.

    What I do know is that the key to preserving your paper documents is to keep them in an acid-free humidity-controlled environment. In other words, never store them in an attic or basement or anywhere that is subject to extreme temperature and humidity changes since this causes rapid deterioration. One can purchase acid-free folders and acid-free boxes. I’m not sure if banker’s boxes fall into that category. I’ve heard that a popular alternative is to encapsulate a document between two sheets of polyester film.

    There is some interesting software out there that helps writers organize their notes. I’ve found Microsoft OneNote very useful. It comes free with Microsoft Office. Idea Cruncher is a simple database application, which lets you create a list in a tree-like structure and add notes against each list item. It’s a simple outliner. I see you have an Excel spreadsheet, which is useful, but it’s what I think of as a flat application. If you’re into Microsoft you might want to consider Access. Although there’s a learning curve, it’s possible to do some amazing things with it. You can set it up to find what you’re looking for at the touch of a key.
