Last year’s New Zealand Family History Fair was a great success and over 1000 visitors enjoyed the event that included free access to Ancestry.com, Findmypast, The Genealogist, Footnote, My Heritage, World Vital Records, and FamilyRelatives. Quite a lineup.
This year’s fair schedule to take place 26 – 27 August, at Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton as follows:
“We will be back BIGGER and BETTER in 2011 at the Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton. Exhibitors, seminars, New Zealand Society of Genealogists branches and interest groups, help desks and look-up services will all be returning along with an Internet Cafe, where you can try out some of the key websites focused on researching your Whakapapa. The recently revamped centre has plenty of free parking and there will be a cafe as well as a coffee cart open throughout the show, if you prefer not to bring your own food and refreshments.
The Fair will be held over two days, Friday 26th and Saturday 27th August, 2011. Please pencil these dates into your calendars so you don’t miss out. Tickets are on sale NOW via Ticketek. Book early to avoid queues on the day at the Fair.
2011 is the International Year of the Forest, so the Fair will focus on Growing and Conserving your Family Tree.
- National bodies such as NZBDM and Paperspast will be present, as will
- the international organization FamilySearch,
- regional groups such as the Central Auckland Research Centre, Auckland Libraries and
- commercial entities such as ancestry.com.au and findmypast.com.au.
For those who require accommodation, the Hamilton Accommodation Accord has put together some “Fair” packages. These packages include a shuttle service between your accommodation and the venue. The motel price is a per room per night cost. With many rooms capable of sleeping 3-4 people this works out very cost effectively if you share a motel room.
Day tours are also being organised by Leisure Time Tours, for non-genealogical spouses who prefer to do other activities while the rest of us are enjoying ourselves at the Fair. For those who wish to make a weekend of it, there are also tours on the Sunday to some research repositories.
Information about the seminars and presenters will be available as soon as details are finalised so keep watching this space. Seminar tickets will be sold only at the Fair so make sure you arrive early on the day to avoid the queues and to get your choice of seminar.
In the mean time, you might want to read up about starting and gathering information for your family tree. The New Zealand Society of Genealogists Inc. (NZSG) have very informative pagesto help you get started, along with some free charts and sheets to download.
Enjoy the journey and happy researching. See you at Claudelands in Hamilton, during Family History Month, August 2011,
The organisers of NZ’s Family History Fair 2011
Sandra, Gay, Michelle, and the rest of the team.”
